From 569eb92a8132b637f36eb6fb3175accf7f3930cf Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Mike Fara Date: Sat, 31 Oct 2026 01:48:31 -0400 Subject: [PATCH 1/2] Tell the AI a power-button-hold crash does not document its cause A 0x1C8 (power button held) or 0xE2 (keyboard or debugger) dump records the user's forced action, not the hang or crash that came first, so the root cause is not in it. Both analysis prompts now say so: the culprit is reported as unknown, a stalled-system finding is an unconfirmed lead, and the recommendations point at how to find the real cause (Kernel-Power 41, Reliability Monitor, recent updates, capturing the next freeze). The BSOD AI rules, the stats meaning for 0x1C8/0xE2 and the local parameter decoding (hold time in ms, triage block pointer) match. Sourced from Microsoft Learn. The API path records its final report in `generateAIReportFromWinDBG`; browser analyses are recorded from `/api/gemini/generateContent` (WinDBG prompts the server rebuilt from the owned job's evidence only), where the WinDBG fields are re-read from the owned upstream job and merged like the browser does (never taken from the client-built prompt, which must contain the upstream structured signal). Fire-and-forget, a no-op unless `WF_CRASH_SIGNAL_URL` + `WF_CRASH_SIGNAL_KEY` are set; `/privacy` documents what is sent -- **Forced crashes (0x1C8 power-button hold, 0xE2 keyboard/debugger, 0xDEADDEAD, live-dump forms 0x11C8/0x21C8)**: the dump records the user's action, not the hang or crash that came first, so the root cause is not in it. `FORCED_CRASH_GUIDANCE` in `shared/promptTemplates.js` (inside both analysis prefixes) tells the AI to say so, report the culprit as `Unknown (not captured in this dump)`, treat any stalled-system finding as an unconfirmed lead, and recommend how to find the real cause; the BSOD AI rules (`server/bsodAi.js`), the stats meaning (`server/bugcheckKnowledge.js`) and the local parameter decoding (`utils/forcedCrash.ts`) say the same. Sources are Microsoft Learn's 0x1C8, 0xE2 and "Forcing a System Crash" pages (`tests/forcedCrash.test.mjs`) +- **Forced crashes (0x1C8 power-button hold, 0xE2 keyboard/debugger, 0xDEADDEAD, live-dump forms 0x11C8/0x21C8)**: the dump records the user's action, not the hang or crash that came first, so the root cause is not in it. The report shows it too: `getReportFacts` adds a `forcedCrash` note (0x1C8, 0xE2, 0xDEADDEAD; not the live-dump forms, where the system kept running), shown as a callout on the report card and carried into the forum and markdown exports. Keep raw binary transport, legacy JSON reads, and the seven-day TTL intact - **Dictionary secrets**: Pin a numeric `redis-zstd-dictionary` version at `/secrets/redis-zstd/dictionary`; never use `latest`, commit the binary, or log its contents - **Redis flushes**: Never automate a whole-database flush.
