feat(desktop): Chrome extensions and passkeys in the browser pane - #9221
The browser pane could not run Chrome extensions, so password managers and their passkeys did not work in it. This adds a Chrome extension host: install from the Chrome Web Store, pin to the toolbar, and sign in with LastPass or 1Password, passkeys included.
The pane gets its own session, persist:browser. Cookies move over once, and the old site data leaves the app session.
Installs, updates that widen access, and Remove ask first, with Chrome's warnings. Extensions follow Chrome's permission rules and cannot act as one another.
Agents drive only panes they open, in persist:browser-agent, with none of the user's extensions, and only the cookies the user imports. The browser and panes skills say so.
Electron 44.10.0. The packaged app ignores remote debugging flags.
Two packages are patched (patches/electron-chrome-*.patch). The Security table in plans/20261030-browser-pane-passkeys.md maps each fix to its guard test. The maintainer has the findings by email.
Also in here: dark: utilities follow the app theme, an agent-jobs sweep race fix, and hermetic host-service tests.
How I tested it
Full suite (desktop 9130, host-service 2710), lint, typecheck, check:i18n, check:plugins, and a password manager with a passkey login by hand in the dev app.
Checklist
PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
"Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs
I have signed the CLA (the bot asks on your first PR)
…er pane
A passkey request in the browser pane never settles: Electron 44 has no
WebAuthn dialog, and the pane runs no third-party Chrome extensions, so
password managers cannot answer it. The spec compares four fixes (Chrome
extensions, Touch ID, the macOS passkey sheet, sign in with Chrome), picks
Chrome extensions first, and keeps a Security table that maps each risk of
running extensions to its fix and guard test.
The theme store sets html.dark or html.light from the chosen theme, but the
desktop stylesheet never declared the dark variant, so Tailwind compiled
dark: to the OS color-scheme media query. A light app theme on a Mac in dark
mode got the dark styles in 164 places. The desktop now declares the same
variant packages/ui uses.

Merge Risk: High · previous review 437e7
The desktop build validation will likely fail until the preload guard names the shims file. Clearing browser data can wipe installed extensions' stored data, such as a password manager vault. Agent-pane isolation has a gap in the extension-world filter. Fix these before merging; the remaining items are smaller correctness and housekeeping issues.

### Issue 1
apps/desktop/scripts/validate-native-runtime.ts:408
The validator requires `preload/browser-extension-alias.js`, but the build emits `preload/browser-extension-shims.js`. Nothing creates the old filename. A clean desktop build therefore fails `validate:native-runtime`, which runs in both `prebuild` and `prepackage`. Check the emitted filename instead.
```suggestion "preload/browser-extension-shims.js",```### Issue 2
patches/electron-[email protected]:382
`originCovered` treats `<all_urls>` and `*://*/*` as covering API permission names too. An extension with either host permission and optional `cookies` gets `true` from `permissions.contains({ permissions: ["cookies"] })` before approval. Then `permissions.request` returns early without asking the user or adding the grant. Cookie calls still fail because the router checks for the actual `cookies` entry.
Compare API permissions by exact name and apply host coverage only to origins, in both bundles.
### Issue 3
apps/desktop/src/main/lib/browser/move-pane-sites.ts:78-82
`movePaneSitesOnce` writes its completion marker before checking copy failures or clearing the old sites. If one cookie is refused, or `clearOldSites` rejects, every later boot skips the unfinished work. Old site data remains in the app session, which the new browsing-data controls no longer clear.
Track copy and cleanup completion separately so cleanup can retry without restoring cookies the user has since deleted.
### Issue 4
apps/desktop/src/main/lib/browser/extension-host/offscreen-documents.ts:46-51
`serveOffscreenDocuments` keeps hidden pages until the extension explicitly closes them or their contents are destroyed. It never closes them when an extension unloads, updates, or is removed. Old hidden pages can stay alive after removal, and a reloaded extension can inherit a stale entry instead of creating its new document.
Add an `extension-unloaded` listener that closes and removes that extension's document.
Hidden pages outlive their extensions
serveOffscreenDocuments keeps hidden pages until the extension explicitly closes them or their contents are destroyed. It never closes them when an extension unloads, updates, or is removed. Old hidden pages can stay alive after removal, and a reloaded extension can inherit a stale entry instead of creating its new document.
Add an extension-unloaded listener that closes and removes that extension's document.
Update the intro. It still describes the old session model.
Lines 12-15 say every operation runs in the pane the user can see, against the pane's real, logged-in session. This PR changes that behavior. Agents now reach only panes they open. Those panes use a separate session with no user logins. Lines 59-62 state this. Lines 22-23 also tell agents to default to panes the user is watching. An agent that follows the intro will try to drive a user-opened pane and get a 403.
Point the preload guard at the shims file the session loads.
The guard checks preload/browser-extension-alias.js. The electron-vite preload config emits browser-extension-shims, and pane-session.ts loads ../preload/browser-extension-shims.js. No inspected build input produces the alias file. A build that runs this validator fails at assertExists. A stale alias artifact would let the guard pass while the shim that runs is never checked.
Preserve extension origins when clearing browser data.
Clear All Data currently clears the entire persist:browser storage partition. This can remove installed extensions' IndexedDB, localStorage, and service-worker data. Use Electron 44's clearData({ excludeOrigins }) path, or an equivalent per-origin policy, with every installed chrome-extension:// origin excluded while preserving the current site-data types.
Refuse context IDs that the filter has not allowed.
The filter hides an extension world only after it sees that world's Runtime.executionContextCreated event. Chromium sends that event only after the client calls Runtime.enable. A client that skips Runtime.enable never adds the world's IDs to hidden. refusal then returns null for a command that names such an ID, and browser-manager.ts forwards the command.
loadWebviewBrowserExtension loads the bundled browser extension into every pane partition, including the agent partition. A client can guess an integer contextId for one of those extension worlds and run code in it. This bypasses the boundary that createExtensionWorldFilter is meant to enforce.
Allow only the context IDs that the filter has seen and passed. Refuse any command that names another context ID.
🔒 Proposed fix
const hidden = new Set<unknown>();
+ const visible = new Set<unknown>();
const isHidden = (id: unknown) => id !== undefined && hidden.has(id);
- return [p.contextId, p.executionContextId, p.uniqueContextId].some(- isHidden,- )- ? With this change, a client must call Runtime.enable before it names a context ID. Commands that do not name a context ID are unaffected.
Add a test that sends Runtime.evaluate with contextId: 7 before any Runtime.enable. The test should expect a refusal.
The app's own browser extension appears in the user's extension list.
loadWebviewBrowserExtension loads resources/browser-extension into every PANE_PARTITIONS session, which includes BROWSER_PARTITION. host.session.extensions.getAllExtensions() therefore returns that internal extension.
The consequences:
The toolbar menu lists it as a user extension.
The user can pin it.
remove and removeBrowserExtension can unload it and clear its storage, which breaks the in-app browser features it provides until the next restart.
List only extensions installed under browserExtensionsPath(). Refuse removal for any other extension.
Add import path from "node:path";. Apply the same path check in removeBrowserExtension before calling uninstallExtension.
originCovered lets an all-sites pattern cover API permission names.
ALL_SITE_PATTERNS.has(declared) returns true for any wanted value, including "cookies" or "notifications". This has two effects for an extension whose manifest has <all_urls>:
Missing grant:permissions.contains({ permissions: ["cookies"] }) returns true. permissions.request then returns true early, so it never asks the user and never writes runtimeGrants. hasApiPermission uses grantedPermissions(...).includes("cookies"), so later cookies.* calls still fail with "requires the cookies permission". Password managers usually declare <all_urls>. Their optional cookies, notifications and webNavigation requests are therefore reported as granted but never work.
Undeclared requests pass: the declared-check in request accepts API permissions that are not in the manifest.
Apply the all-sites shortcut only to host patterns. Make the same change in both bundles.
Also add a guard-test case: an extension with <all_urls> that requests optional cookies must be asked, and must be able to call cookies.getAll after the user allows it.
Also applies to: 884-884
The README contradicts the patch it documents.
Runtime grants: the README says that grants through permissions.request "are not read here, so they open nothing". The patch's grantedPermissions includes runtimeGrants, and the guard test asserts that a granted cookies permission works.
Click events: the README says browserAction.onClicked and contextMenus.onClicked "keep the whole tab". The patch filters browserAction.onClicked with tabDetailsForExtension, and it grants activeTab explicitly on a click or menu action.
Ruled namespaces: the README names four ruled namespaces. ruledApiNamespaces also includes notifications and contextMenus.
This section is the reference for regenerating a security patch. Update it so a later regeneration does not drop or misapply these rules.
… keep tests hermetic
Every host-service process sweeps the same ~/.superset/agent-jobs tree, so
two sweeps raced in rm, and on macOS the loser failed with EPERM. The sweep
ran unawaited from the constructor, so that failure was an unhandled
rejection. Each session folder is now cleaned up on its own: a failure is
logged, and the sweep goes on to the next one.
Tests: the sandbox keepalive suite advances a fake clock instead of real
sleeps (26 ms instead of 366 ms, and no stall under load). The terminal
integration suite pins its daemon sessions to /bin/sh with an empty HOME, so
a developer's login shell and dotfiles no longer run there and push the test
past its wait; a canary on the fake daemon fails if either pin is dropped.
The sandbox archive hook suite clears BASH_ENV, which bash -lc still reads.
The browser pane and the app window shared persist:superset, so any
extension loaded for the pane would also see the app's own requests and
auth headers. The pane now runs in persist:browser; the app window, its
protocols, Sentry and the device hub stay in persist:superset. Every caller
uses the APP_PARTITION and BROWSER_PARTITION constants.
On first start, the pane's cookies copy once into the new session, so users
stay signed in to sites. When every cookie copied, those sites (cookie
domains and pane history origins, never Paradev's own domains) are cleared
from persist:superset, so Clear browsing data reaches all pane data again.
Sites that keep their login in localStorage ask for sign-in once.
Runs electron-chrome-extensions 4.10.0 on the pane session and installs the
Chrome Web Store there (electron-chrome-web-store 0.13.0), so users install
extensions such as 1Password or LastPass and sign in with their passkeys.
- CRX files must carry a verified CRX3 signature; the package checked none.
- The pane's More menu lists extensions with pin and remove. Pinned
extensions sit on the toolbar with their badge (a shared CountBadge, also
used by the ports icon), are kept in local-db settings (migration 0060),
and unpin from a right-click menu. A new install is pinned once.
- chrome.offscreen for extension service workers (LastPass needs it).
- The pane sends Chrome's user agent, workers included, and names itself as
Firefox only on Google's sign-in host, which refuses embedded browsers.
- The store page names the app once and asks before Remove.
Running a password manager in the pane makes it a target for other
extensions and for agents. Each fix below has a guard test, and the spec's
Security table maps them.
- Extensions cannot act as one another: the extension ID comes from the
sender, not the message. Tab URLs, cookies, webNavigation, notifications,
context menus and insertCSS follow Chrome's permission rules;
permissions.request asks the user; native host names cannot be paths.
- Installs and permission-widening updates ask first, with Chrome's
warnings. Only the exact store origin gets the store API. Updates stage
outside the loaded folder.
- Agents drive only panes they open, in persist:browser-agent, with none of
the user's extensions or cookies; the bridge answers 403 for the user's
panes, and CDP hides extension worlds. The browser skill says so.
- The packaged app ignores --remote-debugging-port and -pipe.
- Electron 44.10.0 for Chromium 152.0.7977.169 and MV3 event delivery.
- Extensions always have a current window.
- The store renames only its add and remove buttons, so Google's
"Install Chrome" banner keeps its name.
The pane toolbar gets a puzzle button that lists every extension, to
open, pin or remove, with Get extensions at the end. Only pinned
extensions sit on the toolbar. The More menu no longer carries an
Extensions submenu or pinned rows; a narrow toolbar hides the pinned
buttons and the puzzle menu still reaches them.
1Password's app sets globalThis.browser to its WebExtension polyfill in
strict mode. The shim defined browser with a getter only, so that
assignment threw and the welcome and sign-in pages rendered blank.
Extensions add items with chrome.contextMenus (LanguageTool's "Check
spelling and grammar", 1Password's submenu), but the pane built its own
menu and never asked the extension host for them. The pane's menu now
lists them after the edit items, for the user's pane only.
What & why
The browser pane could not run Chrome extensions, so password managers and their passkeys did not work in it. This adds a Chrome extension host: install from the Chrome Web Store, pin to the toolbar, and sign in with LastPass or 1Password, passkeys included.
persist:browser. Cookies move over once, and the old site data leaves the app session.persist:browser-agent, with none of the user's extensions, and only the cookies the user imports. The browser and panes skills say so.Two packages are patched (
patches/electron-chrome-*.patch). The Security table inplans/20261030-browser-pane-passkeys.mdmaps each fix to its guard test. The maintainer has the findings by email.Also in here:
