What if your computer felt less like a machine and more like a presence?
Yumii started as a question I couldn't stop asking.
Not a chatbot you query. Not a voice assistant you command with a keyword and dismiss. Something that listens. Something that reacts. Something that simply — is there.
In an age where we carry supercomputers in our pockets and talk to language models capable of writing novels, our relationship with software remains fundamentally transactional. You open a tab. You type a prompt. You get an answer. The window closes. There is no continuity. No warmth. No sense that the other side remembers you.
Tools are useful. But they are not companions.
Yumii is an open-source AI companion — a persistent presence on your screen that speaks with emotion, reacts in real-time, and adapts her personality to match what you need in the moment.
She is caring when you are tired. Energetic when you need a push. Calm when you need to think clearly. She is not one fixed thing — she is yours to shape.
Today, she can:
- Hold natural, voice-driven conversations powered by real-time LLMs
- Speak with an expressive, lifelike voice (ElevenLabs / CAMB.ai)
- Listen locally via Whisper or at cloud speed via Groq
- Remember you across restarts — preferences and details, stored locally
- Live on your desktop as a small floating presence — an orb today, with an expressive Live2D avatar as the long-term dream
- Switch personality modes to match your mood or workflow
True companionship is built on shared history. Yumii will remember you across restarts — your preferences, past conversations, and the small details that make you you. Not just a context window. A real memory.
Right now, Yumii waits for you to speak. The goal is to give her the ability to reach out to you — a gentle reminder that your meeting is in ten minutes, a spontaneous check-in after a long day. Moving from reactive to genuinely present.
Calendar. Email. Smart home. Music. The digital world you already live in — accessible through Yumii without developer jargon, OAuth nightmares, or complex setup. Connecting your digital life should feel like clicking "yes", not writing a script.
Richer animations, contextual facial reactions, emotional intelligence that grows with use. The goal is a companion whose face you actually want to look at — because it reflects something real.
Every line of code in this project was written with one conviction:
Technology can be more than a utility. It can be a companion. It can make the digital space feel a little less lonely.
Yumii is still young. Still learning. Still growing.
But that is exactly what companions do.
This is a journey from a passionate hobby project to a holistic AI companion. I invite you to join me in building this future.
